I was pleasantly surprised tonight when I watched "The Dresden Files" on the Sci-Fi Channel.
At first, I expected this to be a series that I would dump after a few episodes, much like "Eureka" (I still don't get why people like that show). Then I realized that about the second commercial break, I really was interested in the show.
The show is based on the successful Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher. This is probably the first time that Sci-fi has taken a shot at adapting a book to a series. I think it has the potential to be a home run.
I saw "potential" because I have to see a few more episodes. The main characters are all very interesting, save the female detective. I thought that the villan of the night had more presence than the detective's cardboard acting talents. Again, this was only first episode.
This feels fresh to me. It pairs a mystery (the main character is a Wizard-for-hire gumshoe) and fantasy. I saw glimmers of humor and horror mixed in with a pretty open-ended back story on Harry that I assume will develop as the series continues.
I think this is one that deserves watching. Check Sci-fi's listings. I know the show from tonight is running a few more times this week. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
Post Script
The episode is availible on iTunes starting tomorrow as well.
