Finally, this gets released in the US. It’s funny. I had been saving an iTunes gift certificate that I got from my in-laws for this soundtrack and had just spent it on another CD, when I saw this came out.
Granted this is going to just appeal to us “Who” fans, but I have to say that Murray Gold has created that definitive sound of “Who”. For the past two seasons, his music has made the series.
A great composer can serve as an amplifier to the emotion that is portrayed on the screen. John Williams is perhaps the best at this. Give Murray Gold a few more years and he could give John a run for his money.
The disc is packed with great tunes that I find myself listening to over and over again. Gold’s take on the “Who” theme is most definitely my favorite. The synthesizer that has plagued the series for far too long has been blended with a full orchestral backing. This makes it more real to me as well as far less cheesy. Strangely, the two vocal tracks that were written for both Christmas specials are the last tracks that I want to listen to. They were nice additions (and I hear are making quite the buzz in the UK), but the scores are too powerful to bother with the “poppy” vocals.
I highly recommend this disc for you “Who” fans as well as fans of soundtracks in general.
The disc can be purchased in most major US music stores, as well as on iTunes.
