Hex: Probably the best "new" show I've seen in a long time

Hex is best described as “Dark Shadows” meets “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”. This UK show has been airing on BBC: America and I hadn’t really given it much thought until saw that there was going to be a marathon a few weeks ago.

Hex is more the story of a place than an individual character. In this case the setting is an old UK school in the countryside that was once home to “strange occurrences”. Cassie (Christina Cole) and Velma (Jemima Rooper) are roommates who’s lives are changed forever in this first series. The beginning of the show seems focused on Cassie’s character, but as the series goes on, things begin to change as we meet the angel turned demon Azazeal (artfully played by Michael Fassbender).

The characters (however minor) are fully developed and have their own stories (one of the things I liked best about “Buffy”). You really start to care about them as the series unfolds and those that you may not have liked at the beginning can suddenly be very likable indeed.

This show paints a rich mythology all its own that is different from much of the religious and mythical stuff viewers have already been exposed to on television. It is very adult themed for American viewers, but it think it is a refreshing change from most of the predetermined crap that exists on American TV. This is the first show in a while that I was actually scared by since I was a kid. The acting is top notch and the cinematography is gorgeous.

It’s a shame that Hex is not yet available on DVD here in the States. The only way I could find to see it is on BBC America. Until they decided to release the show here on DVD, that is the best way to see it.

I definitely recommend it.
