Unfortunately there is going to be no way I'm going to get an opportunity to see Frank Miller's "300" this weekend. I have been following the production of the film for a long time. The adaptation of Miller's graphic novel has really refined green screen work to the level of art. The characters seem to be placed IN the comic (much like Miller's "Sin City") instead of ripped out of it (like Spiderman).
Let's face it, besides great series like "Something to be Desired" which is set firmly in the here and now, any scifi/fantasy internet video production is probably going to have some sort of green screen work in it to achieve the special effects.
It won't be too long before this technology is made cheaper and gets into the hands of teenagers that can start expressing themselves in worlds we cannot even imagine. How many young George Lucases will we see? I think the shift away from mainstream movie house releases is only going to accelerate in the next few years.
Some great examples of this are:
Sanctuary
Stranger Things
Babylon 5
Firefly (not really, but that would be freekin' SWEET)
So go see "300" this weekend and let me know what you think. The first reviews are starting to trickle in. Check out this one from "Movie Pulse" if you are still undecided about the movie.
Do we really want to see "Wild Hogs" as the #1 movie in the USA again?
