iPhone Rate Plans: Not bad!

Apple and AT&T released their rate plans today for the iPhone. All plans include unlimited data (which is nice). I pay about $10 more a month for unlimited data on my Verizon Blackberry.

I think that those that have the money to spend on the iPhone were actually treated right by this announcement. While the iPhone isn't for everyone, those early adopters will be treated to a decent rate that is comparable to most other plans I've seen recently.

The thing that no one is really talking about is the fact that YOU choose your service, not the AT&T reps. You purchase the phone and choose the plan that best fits you the first time you sync your phone with iTunes. This makes the phone more attractive to me because I hate dealing with cell reps. This totally blocks that process. One could order from the Apple store, receive it at home, and hook it up without the up-selling pressure of a 18 year old who knows next to nothing about your needs (not to mention the "real" world).

This also makes sense for the adoption of the (fairly buggy) Safari browser on Windows. We all know that it will be the only browser that the iPhone can sync with. This could put yet another piece of Apple software on Windows machines.

It will be interesting to see if the hype pans out. At the end of the day, I would just be happy with a funtional phone that works great.

Plus we need to get this out of the way so the new iPods can be announced in the fall.

UPDATE: Forgot to add the rate plan link. Ooops!
