Horton Hears A ROAR!!!!

Last weekend was a special weekend.  One that I thought would serve as a right of passage for my three year old daughter.  Going to her first movie!

She had been excited about it all day.  She was practically straining to get out of her car seat as we went in to the movie theater.  She started wide-eyed at all the video games, concessions, and movie posters.  I was a proud parent.  Being the entertainment geek that I am, I was so excited.

My first movie was "The Legend of the Lone Ranger".  I can still remember when the lights went down and the movie started how fascinated I was.  I was hoping that Lilly would feel that as well.

The movie started out great.  I thought the story was engaging (even though I just can't physically stand Jim Carrey).  I'm sure most of you have read the Dr. Seuss book, so I won't even pretend to give you the plot.

The animation was very good.  Sometimes, however, I felt that the movie was trying really hard to be LIKE a Pixar movie and not trying to stay true to the Dr. Seuss vision.  A lot of the visuals were nicely done and brought a lot of the original illustrations to life.

The voice tallent was the part of the movie that just kept pulling me out of the flow of the movie.  Save for Steve Carell's great job as the "Mayor", the rest of the voices seemed to just be recycled from the last twelve animated kinds movies.  I think they could have been a little more creative in their voice choices.

That was my impression.  Of course I was the only one of the three of us to actually see the whole movie.  I hadn't counted on the fact that Lilly had never seen a gigantic screen before.  I think that Horton was way too huge for her.  She was scared almost from the start.  I don't think she was used to the booming sound either.  I felt bad for her.  I guess that mega giant screens are just too much for three year olds.

So I guess it will be a while until we go back to the theaters.  Either that or I will have to start playing my home theater a bit louder.

So I guess I would give "Horton" four stars out of five, but I think Lilly would have to give it one star out of five.

Dr. Seuss is classic, i forgot how much that guy packed into such simple storylines... they didn't add much to the original story either except for the usual Jim Carreyisms.
