As the most faithful readers of this website know, I'm a big fan of podcasts. I have over 75 that I'm subscribed to and am adding more and more each week.
I would have to say that (if I were actually paying for them) most of them aren't worth my money. They simply exist as time wasting devices that are more stimulating than typical boring television.
TED however, is a huge exception. The TED (Technology Entertainment Design) conference is an annual event that brings together "the big thinkers" in almost every discipline to give brief talks about their life, inspirations and dreams. The event is a celebration of the passions of these people. They serve as an inspiration for all of us.
I was always mad that you couldn't get access to these lectures. Last year, I was fortunate enough to discover the TED YouTube site. When I discovered that random TED conferences were in iTunes, I jumped at the chance.
It's strange that of the three or four talks that seem to find their way into my iPod each week, it's always the one person that I have never heard of before that really fascinates me. Maybe it's because it gives me the hope that someday I could have just such an inspirational story to share with everyone.
TED is pretty exclusive. It costs anywhere from $4,000 to $6,000 to attend and the guest list is rather selective. These podcasts are probably the closest that we mortals are ever going to get to the actual event.
Try this simple exercise. Download a few episodes and watch them when you are feeling down about yourself or the world. I guarantee that you will feel better almost immediately after watching any one of these talks. They are my current drug of choice that I hope to push on you as well.
