Just got done watching Edward Norton in "The Illusionist" last night.
While the movie is very visually stunning it is a bit lacking in the story department.
It appeared that Norton was very into this role and took it very seriously, maybe a bit too seriously. The constant "mysterious man" routine fit well with the movie, but every time he tried to be more human, it wasn't really believable.
Jessica Beal does her usual wooden actress routine. While Norton is trying to be mysterious and unemotional, Beal just is due to an obviouly lack of acting talent.
The breakout role of the movie was Paul Giamatti's "Inspector Uhl", a very curious policeman who comes from common roots.
Overall, I liked the movie, but I think it could have been more effectively told totally from Uhl's perspective. It would have made the movie more mysterious and maybe would have allowed me to actually be surprised during the "surprise" ending.
The movie is worth a look, for the visuals alone. Just don't expect any "Illusions" about either Norton's or Beal's performances.
