We have been having an especially mild winter, snow-wise here in the Salt Lake Valley. We have had below average temperatures and pretty bad inversions (think smog), but not a heck of a lot of snow. This is fine with me, since I don't especially like shoveling the stuff and since my husband took his new job, I have to shovel it if it comes down during the week. (I have discovered the "leave it and it will melt" philosophy of snow removal really doesn't work when the temperature drops to 10 below after the storm and the snow turns into fused iced mass of tire tracks and dog pawprints for 4 weeks). Our driveway isn't all that big, so I have resisted getting a snow blower, after all, when i was a kid we had a driveway that was 4 times as long and we never had a snow blower, AND it snowed a lot more in upstate NY than it does here! Plus my husband was doing all of the shoveling, so why did we need one? He has enough toys.
This week, however, we have gotten at least 9 inches of snow 2 times, on Monday and on today (Friday). It is extra weird because it has been in the 50s otherwise. Go to bed, the temps are in the mid 40s, and wake up to a bunch of wet, heavy, snow.
Did I mention I HATE shoveling? It goes back to my childhood, since my parents apparently had children for the express purpose of shoveling snow (and maybe doing the dishes, we had a dishwasher we NEVER used). I think I started shoveling when I was about 8. Wet snow is the worst. It is heavy. Plus I take Abby the puppy out with me, and she is pretty good at clotheslining me with her leash.
I like snow because it clears out the inversions, and it is fun to watch Abby play in it, and I love being home with nowhere to go and watching it pile up, but I hate all of the grownup bits associated with it, namely shoveling it.
Then there are the drivers. People really don't know how to drive in the snow. They go to fast, tailgate, don't know how to control skids, and in general make the roads much worse than even the snow does. Some SUV drivers are the worst. They really believe they are invincible. (I am not one of those SUV drivers, I am very careful and slow during storms). I didn't even drive today, I carpooled with a coworker who is another careful SUV driver. We only saw a few idiots today, one of which was someone in a Volvo who tried to drive over a snow covered median, cutting us off to get there.
All in all, I like snow. I think that there is more in the forecast for the next week or so. I don't mind this, because my husband is working in Salt Lake City for the next 2 weeks!
