Battlestar Galactica Season 3

Battlestar season 3.0 can best be described as the beginning of the end. For two full years we have watched the story build, the end of each season more exciting than the next. Until this season.

This was the season that the show went sideways. I could have watched the first two episodes of the season followed by the last two and never really have missed anything.

The stories got more personal this season (which always kills a show in my opinion). Most of the cast ended up switching places this season. They managed to do a personal story on virtually every minor character. This left many of the major characters out in the cold. They just weren’t there.

The beginning of the season looks promising on Cylon occupied New Caprica. We get a revealing look at what life is like in a resistance (including the horrible things that have to be done to keep it going). The liberation of the humans on New Caprica comes at the expense of the Pegasus and many of the former New Caprican’s lives.

Towards the middle of the season we see life trying to return to normal. Unfortunately, life at the hands of the Cylons has changed a lot of the former residents of New Caprica. The reintegration of the former colonists with the officers who remained with the fleet provides most of the remainder of the season’s plot points. This is where I feel that the series started to loose my interest. There are too many individual stories that all lead to something at the end of the season, but it was really too slow for me to even remember most of the main points.

The “death” of Starbuck near the end of the season jump started the show again. We finally see the trial of Baltar that seems to be referred to the whole season, a possible revelation of the remaining Cylons, and Bob Dylan? Then we get the big season finale (which I won’t spoil because I pretty much spoiled everything else).

I think that the show will officially be over next season. There was too much hinted at in the last episode to not put the show to rest. In my opinion, it needs it. This show is rapidly getting tired. End it now while it’s still original and fresh so it will remain in the lexicon of best SciFi shows ever.
