Back after a long break

(written on Monday, September 24th)

Today I sit on an airplane to Philadelphia, and while I am captive in hollow metal tube, I thought I would catch up on some random reviews. I all of you who have been patiently waiting for new reviews, I do apologize. Things have gotten a little stressful in the the Dr. Sue household. I am currently trying to find a new job because my grant funding has run out, and it looks like I am either terribly overqualified for some positions, or lack the requisite specialized knowledge for other jobs. Apparently now that I have a Ph.D., my brain is full and I can no longer learn anything else (according to the biotech industry, anyway).

(on a side note, do interviewers really learn anything from questions like “why do you want to work here? Because I need a job, don’t really want to relocate if it can be avoided and you have great benefits? Also, I do know that clinical research and biotech research are very different from what I have been doing, but NOBODY WILL HIRE ME because I have been a postdoc for so long and am too “expensive”. The only career path where someone with 11 years of post high school education is too expensive at $50,000 a year. Everyone out there considering graduate school in the biosciences take note. Try to get a position in industry or in a clinical lab (especially for microbiology related careers) as a tech or something for a couple of years first. After you get a Ph.D., it is much harder to get your foot in the door, because, as I mentioned before, your brain is full and can’t learn any more).

But that is neither here nor there, my trip today is an interview for a position, so I am at least getting some interviews. I’ll let everyone know what is going on once I know what is going on. Truth be told, it would probably be ok to have a brief bout with unemployment, I may even be able to get some things done around the house for a change. The closets are calling to me to be cleaned and organized, any maybe I can do some (simple) home improvements, (or, I can sleep till noon, play with the pets and the neighbor kids, play games on my computer, and write more really random reviews).

On another front, Mr. Dr. Sue injured himself doing something stupid on Labor day and is still suffering. Unfortunately, there were no witnesses in our group , so I can’t go into the gory details, but in entailed a jetski, something called a ‘standing donut’ on said jetski, impact with a right hip and probably a head, falling off of the jetski, and 3 hours in the emergency room. Why do men do stupid things? Am I really supposed to feel sorry for someone who acts like a 14 year old when he is 36? Because I don’t.

Anyway, no excuses, but them’s the reasons I have been absent from the blog these days. Since I will be unemployed soon, perhaps I will update a little more regularly. One can hope.
